Balance of Good and Evil by Kaxen6 Balance of Good and Evil by Kaxen6
A random thought while mulling about dichotomies in English class.

It's really obvious what sorts of tropes I hate with a burning passion, isn't it?

Balance of order and chaos makes sense since total order probably brings about stagnation and total chaos gets nothing done.

But the balance of good and evil? How often in your daily lives do you go "Mmm! Needs more evil!" (in a non-joking manner).

A lot of people seem to think a world of only good means it'll be boring, but if you're doing good vs. evil (as a moral dichotomy... this thinking is even more flawed if you go with good vs. bad as stuff I like vs stuff I don't... if the world was only stuff you liked, it couldn't be boring because then you wouldn't like it!), there are plenty of ways to have conflict in your life without the interventions of dictators, rapists, terrorists, thieves, puppy kickers, pedophiles, arsonists... AND JAYWALKERS.

...like natural disasters, the weather being terrible, trying to get people to agree with you without punching them in the face, remembering that thing you told your friend you'd do for them, and trying to sell art.

Or maybe humans are bastards so we're under the impression that conflict that doesn't lead to sex or violence is not worth thinking about.

Mmmm... tasty tropes.

I like to think that 'evil/bad' of the balance is more along the lines of 'random'. Could be a favorable event, could be a bad event. Kinda like natural disasters. A good flood will bring in some good topsoil for the farmers... next season. This season's crops are toast. A good ice storm will clear out all the dead limbs from the trees that you were too lazy to climb up there and prune anyway, unless the limbs fall through your roof. Meh. Flip a coin.

Mmm.. tropes... and jaywalkers... and punching people who disagree..

That's a really good point. I've never really thought about it, which is strange, cause... this is the kind of thing I'd think about constantly for a week or two and rant about to whoever would listen until I find something else to rant about *deep breath* I know some people that are going to get an earful tomorrow :mwahaha:

And YES, JAYWALKERS! :rage: A few days ago my sister was driving, and this kid (who I know, actually) suddenly skateboards into the middle of the street, RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY SISTER'S CAR. Thankfully she was miraculously able to brake in time, but if she hadn't he'd either be in the hospital or the morgue right now. It made me so MAD! We would have been blamed and sued, and had to live with that guilt, even though it was completely his fault :pissedoff:

Yeah... when I take over the world, running over jaywalkers will be legal...

"... AND JAYWALKERS!"

I see what you did thar.

This is what really pissed me off when researching 'the problem of good and evil' for my Christian Studies class. They seemed to think a world where people can't do bad things is... um, bad. Being forced to do things is only bad if you don't like what you're doing!

Then there's the people who say that suffering is all for the greater good. This+natural disasters+African children=WTF?

Ah Kax, I can always count on you to brighten my day :D

I find jaywalking offensive... running over them is somehow my fault. ...It's not my fault if I run over a small animal that darts out, but a person that darts out? BAH!

...Considering that (most of) the angels don't have much evil capability (and the heavenly host would be intensely less productive if angels acted more like humans more often), you can go in a pretty "God is evil" direction if you start thinking about "a world where people can't do bad things is bad" since that's essentially... angels in Heaven? O_o Or as far as I know, I anyway. Wouldn't really call myself an expert on Christianity. I'm just here for the four-headed angels.

"Maintaining the balance of good and evil" as an excuse not to butt into affairs always bugged me... Today, I decided how to say it was stupid.

Hell, even "light vs. darkness" makes more sense since every light inevitably makes something cast a shadow and somethings really do need darkness. A world of only light would have a problem with developing film, lost owls, and insomniacs... :lmao:

:D I've never really been one for balance rather they both are needed. Opposites must exist to make the other to be visible too. No good can be done without evil.
