Totally Relatable by Kaxen6 Totally Relatable by Kaxen6
Every time someone suggests there should/could be more homosexual characters in video game land, someone pops up and makes some quip to the effect of "I can't sympathize/empathize/relate to/like any gay character" (which I sort of hope they don't apply to real life to that same extent because switching that statement to real humans sounds sort of like saying anything a homosexual person feels doesn't exist to the person making the statement or putting homosexuals in such a category of "otherness" that they're not human).

It baffles me a little (...and there's always one person who assumes that what people mean by adding gays to video games means every video game would have a token gay for some bizarre reason...).

Especially since video games are well... on account some of them are wish fulfillment for omnicidal maniacs, others are crazy-ass how-is-this-not-made-on-drugs fantasies, and so much random crap... but somehow a guy who fancies guys is that INCOMPREHENSIBLY FOREIGN and MORALLY OBJECTIONABLE.

I dunno...

Do you watch the Extra Credit series on the Escapist? They did an episode this week pretty much all about this.

someone was watching extra credits yesterday. I still agree with your point though.

Skitty-On-Wailord Action? Somebody's a fan of TV Tropes. :)

Yeah, I don't get the "I don't relate to gays" argument either. I can understand people who don't want it shoved in their faces, but the mere presence of homosexuality doesn't automatically make things bad. In Dragon Age, Zevran hit on my character and, following a polite rejection, he didn't press the matter. If he persisted no matter what, it would bug me, but given that he doesn't, I'm fine with it.

Still, it is amusing to see the horrified reactions of people who unwittingly romance him...

:ohnoes: "HE SAID IT WAS A MASSAGE!" :ohnoes:

I mean, everyone can relate to stripper witches who summon demons.

these dudes clearly never met Zevran, that guy was pretty damned gay, a great likable character, and charming enough to get some gray warden man ass, and that is saying A LOT!

Zevran's bisexual though. It's not quite the same since he still likes boobies. And then RPGs are different, because the player influences behavior and romances.

I think what she means is more like an adventure game where the main character is gay because that's their personality--like how you don't choose Ezio's lady's-man personality, it's something already written into him.

oh, well i suppose your right since Zevy is also a bit of a man whore, but while on this little tangent bioware has been pretty forward thinking in letting you be gay or lesbian in their games, hell in jade empire you could get an all girl threesome(or so i've heard, not positive since i never played as a woman to check) or a guy on guy fest going depending on what gender you went with or how well you played your card, with those guys its all just up to how well you can chat some one up, and what gender you picked (mass effect not withstanding since none of the guys were willing to get down with the commander)

and if your going to make the argument that to be a gay character that the character has to be based around the fact that they like man rod, then its a good thing that they dont exist, if a character was based entirely off of being gay at first he would be painfully two dimensional and would likely stay that way even after getting a good amount of character development, sexuality should always be an interesting side note that only really comes up if situation appropriate (like if the party needs some one to seduce a female guard and they ask the suave hansom party member to do it, but he objects because he's gay, forcing the player to do so)

Yeah, Zevran's a manwhore. I adore him anyway  For the chicks who wanted some lesbian action Leliana was bisexual too.

I think ME2 might've changed that, but I'm not sure (I play girl characters and my brothers wouldn't go for a gay relationship). I do know that there are more options for lesbian relationships/relationships in general, so that may have opened some doors for the guys too.

I think you said it best, so I'll just say I agree. XP Otherwise I'd practically be quoting you, hahaha. But it's the same thing as if someone's character is based around being 'OMG SO MANLY': it's a cardboard cutout.

That last idea would be so funny, suggest it to some developer or something :D

nah, i play male shepherds and unless you download some mod that gets rid of gender restrictions on conversation options, your stuck as straight, which sucks because Garus would have become my best buddy if he didn't run out of chat options so damned fast! (especially since i dont mind gay dudes hitting on me)

and i would suggest that, buuuuuut im a game design student myself and i dont want to give away gold, ya know?

My brother is defenitely pursuing a bromance with Garrus, hahaha XD He can't help that he's a cooler, more interesting character than almost anyone else on the ship. Well, Tali's pretty cool too, but Garrus is ME's Batman.

Then you need to write that down, don't forget it! XD What kinds of games are you interested in creating?
sordcooper2 Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2010  Student General Artist
yah, and that's saying something since there's a reptilian alien who sings Gilbert and Sullivan in between fixing joker's brittle bones and fiding out who humped a verren

well I've got ideas for rpgs, shooters, a rhythm game, even a harvest moon rip off, the problem is figuring out how to take stuff I've learned in programing classes and making something other than a simple mud out of it
LeitaKree Featured By Owner Dec 13, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Oh yeah, Mordin's cool too, but I adored Tali and Garrus back in ME1 so they have senority. It's really hard deciding who I take on missions because I like everyone so much >_< I mean, Garrus and Tali were easily the two best team members in ME1 (for the way I did their stats and leveled them) so I always picked them, but I actually like the human "team" members this time around.

That's the problem with everything, the stupid ideas don't create themselves, hahaha.
